1. What Is a Random Name Generator?
A random name generator — also called a name gen,
name creator, or name randomizer — is a free browser-based tool that
instantly produces random names from a large database. Unlike a static
baby-name list or a character-name book, a random name generator lets
you filter by type and gender, generate a batch of results in under a
second, and copy any name with a single click.
spinthewheelsonline.com's random name generator draws from 10,000+
names across 8 categories — real names, fantasy, game usernames,
nicknames, baby names, medieval, sci-fi, and pet names. Every feature
is free: no signup, no paywall, no premium tier.
The tool actually has two distinct modes. The
generator (Generate tab) creates new names from that
built-in database based on the filters you choose — useful when you
need name ideas. The picker (Pick From My List tab)
works with your own list instead, randomly selecting one entry with a
dramatic animated reveal — useful when you already have names in mind
and just need a fair way to choose between them.
2. How to Use the Generator & Picker
Getting a result takes only a few seconds — no account, no setup.
1
Choose your name type & filters
Select a name type — real, fantasy, game, nickname, baby,
medieval, sci-fi, or pet — then filter by gender and pick a
format: first name only, last name only, or full name.
2
Generate, or switch to the picker
Set how many names you want (1–20) and click
Generate Names. Or switch to
Pick From My List and paste your own names for a
slot-machine style reveal.
3
Copy any name or copy all
Click a name card to copy that single name, or use
Copy All in the results header to copy every
generated name at once.
4
Save & share your list
Hit Save to store your picker list in your
browser, or Share List to copy a link that loads
your exact list for anyone who opens it.
3. Generator & Picker Customization
The Name Filters panel controls what the generator
produces. Name Type picks the database category —
real names, fantasy, game & username ideas, nicknames, baby names,
medieval & historical, sci-fi & space, or pet names.
Gender narrows results to male, female, or any, and
Name Format switches between first name only, last
name only, or full name. How Many? sets the batch
size from 1 to 20 results per click.
The picker has its own settings.
Remove Winner After Pick
takes each selected name out of the list automatically, so nobody is
picked twice — ideal for raffles, roll calls, and Secret Santa draws.
Show Confetti on Pick adds a celebration animation to
every winning reveal; toggle it off for a quieter, faster pick.
4. Adding Your Own Name List
Switch to the Pick From My List tab and paste your
names into the text box — one per line or comma-separated. A handful
of quick-load presets (class names, a team roster, game characters,
baby names, a giveaway sample, and pet names) are also available if
you just want to try the picker out.
This mode is built for choosing fairly from people or options you
already have in mind:
-
Teachers paste a class roster and draw names for cold-calling or
group assignments
-
Streamers and creators paste viewer or subscriber names for a
transparent giveaway pick
-
Offices use Remove Winner mode to draw Secret Santa assignments one
by one
-
Teams paste member names to randomly assign who presents first or
leads standup
For a visual, spinning version of the same idea — with music and
confetti on a colorful wheel — try the
Spin The Wheel or the dedicated
Team Picker Wheel.
5. How a Name Is Selected
The generator uses JavaScript's
Math.random()
function with uniform distribution to select names, so every name in
your filtered pool has exactly equal probability of appearing.
The picker applies the same uniform distribution
across your custom list — whether it has 3 names or 300, every entry
has equal odds. The slot-machine animation is purely cosmetic: the
winner is calculated the instant you click, and the animation simply
builds suspense before the result is shown. Adding the same name more
than once increases its odds proportionally, since each entry counts
as its own slot.
6. Saving & Sharing
Click Save to store your picker list in your
browser's local storage — it will be there the next time you open this
page on the same device and browser.
Click Share List to copy a unique link with your
exact list encoded directly in the URL. Anyone who opens that link
sees your complete list instantly, with no account required — useful
when you want your audience to verify their name is really included
before a giveaway pick.
Your privacy matters: spinthewheelsonline.com does not collect, store,
or transmit the names in your picker list to a server. Saved lists
live only in your browser, and shared links carry the list in the link
itself.
7. More Free Tools
The random name generator and picker is one of many free tools on
spinthewheelsonline.com. For a visual, animated spin instead of a
slot-machine reveal, try the Spin The Wheel — it takes
your name list and spins a colorful wheel with music and confetti.
Other related tools include the
Team Picker Wheel for splitting
people into groups, the
Yes No Generator for quick decisions,
and the Number Picker Wheel for
random number draws. All of them are free, save to your browser, and
generate shareable links, just like this page.
