What Is a Country Wheel?

A country wheel is a spinner loaded with every country in the world that lands on one at random when you spin it. It is also known as a country picker wheel, wheel of countries, country spinner or country roulette. This one covers 197 countries, so there is no typing names into a generic wheel-of-names tool first.

Lists of "all countries" disagree on the number: you will see 193, 195 or 197 depending on what counts as a country. For geography lessons and general knowledge most people want the inclusive list, so that is the default here. The section on country counts explains each figure and how to switch to the other two.

Three setups cover most needs:

• Any country: keep the filter on World. Good for trivia, travel ideas and "what country should I draw?" prompts.
• One region: tap a continent button. For a sub-region such as the Balkans, the Caribbean or Scandinavia, use Custom, search each name and press Apply.
• No repeats: turn on Remove After Pick. Each spin removes the winner, so a group can work through a whole continent without seeing a country twice.

Why Country Counts Differ: 193, 195 or 197?

No single list of countries is universally accepted. The three most common totals come from where the line is drawn:

The presets sit in the Custom panel. Press one and the wheel rebuilds immediately. Capitals and statuses in some of these cases are disputed, and the wheel lists them as commonly shown in atlases rather than taking a political position.

Notes: Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Cyprus are grouped under Asia, and Egypt under Africa. Palestine's declared capital is East Jerusalem, with Ramallah as the administrative seat. Jerusalem is listed as Israel's capital as declared by Israel; international recognition of that varies. Bulgaria is listed with the Euro following its adoption in January 2026. Some countries have more than one capital, covered below.

Capitals That Surprise People

A common geography trap is assuming the biggest city is the capital. For these countries it is not:

Several countries also split government functions across more than one city. The wheel shows one capital per country, so keep these in mind:

• South Africa: Pretoria (executive), Cape Town (legislative) and Bloemfontein (judicial).
• Bolivia: Sucre is the constitutional capital; La Paz is the seat of government.
• Netherlands: Amsterdam is the capital; the government sits in The Hague.
• Sri Lanka: Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is the legislative capital; Colombo is the commercial centre.
• Benin: Porto-Novo is the official capital; Cotonou is the seat of government.
• Ivory Coast: Yamoussoukro is the political capital; Abidjan is the economic centre.
• Eswatini: Mbabane is the administrative capital; Lobamba is the royal and legislative capital.
• Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur is the capital; Putrajaya is the administrative centre.

A good quiz habit: when the wheel lands on one of these, ask players to name both the capital and the largest city.

Country Facts Hidden in the Data

Africa carries the most weight on the World wheel at 54 countries, about 27% of every spin. South America is the lightest continent filter at 12, so you cycle through it in a handful of spins.

Currency clusters more than you would expect. 26 of Europe's 44 countries use the Euro (27 on the whole wheel, counting Cyprus), while 7 nations across several continents (Timor-Leste, El Salvador, United States, Ecuador, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau) use the US Dollar. West and Central Africa share two CFA francs: 8 countries use the West African CFA Franc and 6 use the Central African CFA Franc.

Vatican City is the smallest sovereign state on the wheel by both population and area.

Ways to Play and Study With a Country Wheel

1. Capital quiz: spin, name the capital from memory, then check the Country Details card. One point per correct answer.
2. Flag guess: cover the wheel result, have players describe the flag they expect, then reveal it. Pair it with the random flag generator.
3. 20 Questions: one player spins privately and the others ask yes/no questions (landlocked? in Asia? uses the Euro?) to find the country.

How a Spin Is Decided

Every country currently on the wheel has an equal chance. The result comes from a random number generated in your browser right before the animation starts. Nothing is decided in advance and nothing is sent to a server, and the wheel then animates to the slice that number selects.
